Jochen Kunkel, the area director of area d 6, organized a workshop about mentoring in Würzburg.
How was it? Well, I attended it and can say that I had a great time. Meeting some of the people for the first time in person maybe had something to do with it.
What did I learn? Let’s be honest, I was a bit nervous about the day. Yes, I attendet the workshop for the mentors which was held by Yvonne. Difference between consulting, coaching and mentoring? No, that wasn’t where we started and I loved it. We had some deep communication about our challenges and shared our experiences with real cases.
The biggest learning for me besides many other was one thing or rather one sentence:
“A mentor needs to give the mentee the tooles and skills needed to de able to decide if the mentoring is useful for the mentee or not.”
What do I mean with that? Yvonne and our group fought that the success of the mentorship depends on the mentee. We only can provide help or clear the way a bit. Walk the way? Now that is the job for the mentee. But let’s take a step back. Is the mentee always capable of giving appropriate feedback and articulate perfectly clear what he or she might need? Do we mean the same if we are speaking about “a great speech”?
This day for me was very insightful and for that I thank Jochen for the organization and Yvonne and my group for the great exchange of experiences.
