The Power of Support

As Toastmasters, we know that public speaking can be a daunting task. It takes courage and confidence to stand up in front of a group of people and deliver a speech. But what many of us may not realize is that Toastmasters contests are not just about showcasing our own skills and abilities – they’re also about the power of support and the way it brings out the best in people.

At a contest, there’s no shortage of work to be done. From setting up the venue to organizing the program to providing feedback to the speakers, there are countless tasks that need to be completed in order for the event to run smoothly. And while there may be designated volunteers for each task, it’s often the case that people step up and help out in whatever way they can, even if they weren’t specifically asked to do so.

This is where the power of support comes in. When we see others working hard and giving their all to make the event a success, it inspires us to do the same. It creates a sense of camaraderie and community, and it shows us that we’re all in this together. It reminds us that we don’t have to go it alone – that we can lean on each other for support and encouragement. Especially for our area contest Jochen and myself experienced this supporting spirit prior to the contest itself. We brought in people we knew where long-time-members and we could therefore benefit from there experience. And they shared their knowledge gladly.

At the contest itself, you’ll see this supportive spirit in action. Whether it’s someone stepping in to fill a gap in the program, or a fellow Toastmaster offering words of encouragement to a nervous speaker, there’s a sense that everyone is working together towards a common goal. For example, we needed some help with the preparation of the rooms and setup the virtual room. People helped without being asked to, they just saw that they could help. Thank you so much for that, fellow Toastmaster!

This supportive atmosphere is what makes Toastmasters contests so special. It’s not just about showcasing our own skills – it’s about creating a space where we can all learn and grow together. It’s about recognizing that we’re all on the same journey, and that we can all benefit from the wisdom and experience of others.

In conclusion, the power of support is a key element of Toastmasters contests. It’s what brings out the best in people, and it’s what creates a sense of community and camaraderie. So the next time you attend a Toastmasters contest, remember to take a moment to appreciate the supportive spirit that’s all around you. And if you see an opportunity to lend a hand or offer some encouragement, don’t hesitate to do so – because that’s what Toastmasters is all about.
